Education In Cyprus
Education in Cyprus is overseen by the Ministry of Education and Culture. Because of the high public and private emphasis on education and research, Cyprus is considered to be a center for education and research in the Eastern Mediterranean. Put differently, Cyprus is very well known for offering high quality education. A range of reputable public and private schools exist at all levels of education, all providing outstanding levels of education.
The education system in Cyprus is divided into pre-primary education (ages 3–6), primary education (ages 6–12), secondary education (ages 12–18) and higher education (ages 18+). Full-time education is compulsory for all children aged between 5 and 15. It is important to also highlight that the Cypriot government has traditionally tried to ensure that children from other countries continue their education whilst they are in Cyprus. In addition, teachers receive training to assist them to respond adequately to the teaching of pupils from other language backgrounds. Furthermore, a large number of high quality private schools (Greek, English, French, Italian and Russian-language) are available and most of them maintain very high academic standards. Like within the EU countries and the USA, higher education in Cyprus is designed with a four-year bachelor's degree.
Postgraduate degrees include master's degrees, either taught or by research, and the doctorate, a research degree that usually takes at least three years. Universities require accreditation in order to issue degrees and the standards and bars for accreditation are set very high.
State-provided education (including higher education) is free of charge while private-provided education is paid by the students or their families independently of nationality. Private schools generally charge as follows: Pre-primary education (including kindergarten) tuition ranges between 1,500 to 4,000 Euros per year. Primary education school fees span between 4,000-6,000 Euros per year, while secondary education school fees typically span between 6,000 to 8,000 Euros per year. Because of the high standards of education, both primary and secondary private schools issue diplomas that are recognized by the European countries. Private college and university tuition typically ranges between 5,000 to 9,000 Euros per year.
Almost all local colleges and universities are recognized internationally and in most cases the credits received from a college or university in Cyprus are fully transferable to universities or colleges abroad. The great majority of local college programs are also preparing their students to further their education in other highly regarded European or USA universities (when they choose to do so).
The high standards of education, in Cyprus, in combination with the low cost of education are only two of the many reasons that make the Cypriot permanent residency (immigration permit) and citizenship programs are among the most attractive immigration programs within Europe and the world.
