Cyprus' Economic Outlook - Q1 2017 A&R Cyprus-Greece Fine Properties & Pythagorean Capital Market Advisers Fri, 12 May 2017
Falling unemployment, rising consumption and rising investment have contributed to a strong 2.8% GDP growth in 2016. The 2016 economic growth was broad based and both our models as well as the European Economic Commission's models foresee these positive trends to persist in 2017 and beyond. These economic trends combined with a falling national debt as a ratio to GDP will highly likely encourage gradual loosening of the fiscal policy of the Cypriot government.
Figure 1, above, shows the European Commission’s most recent forecasts of the Cypriot economy.
As shown from Figure 1, above, according to European Commission’s economic models and hypotheses, the Cypriot economy is expected to grow by 2,5% in 2017 and then to moderate gradually to 2.3% in 2018. The two significant factors that impact the European Commission economic models are the substantially improved housing activity and the the increase in private consumption. The European Commission highlights that the 2016 growth in the tourism sector will continue in 2017 and beyond, although at a slower pace, thus contributing to falling unemployment and rising real salaries.
